SESSION SCHEDULE - COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Tuition is based on the number of sessions of a course you attend throughout the week. Some courses are offered multiple times with the same or different instructors. If you sign up for 3 or less sessions, cost is $60 each; 4 –5 sessions, $50 each; more than 5 sessions, $40 each—OR— $40/$30/$20 for auditing stock classes, and shorter classes. Afternoon classroom sessions are approximately an hour in length at are priced at $30/$20/$10. Sessions are rated per handler/dog team. A handler with multiple dogs wanting to work both in the same course must register each separately.

Herding 101 - Intro to the Bubble

Introduction to the ABC’s of round pen herding from the initial herding evaluation and starting your dog on stock. No prerequisite.

Tending 101—Intro to Borders
M/T/TH/F 7 am—11am

Introduction to the ABC’s of tending style herding from the initial tending instinct evaluation and starting your dog on borders with stock. No prerequisite.

Herding 102 - Gate & Pen Safety
T//TH 5 pm—dark

Gate and Pen Safety—Students will learn basics of getting stock in and out of pens and gates in a safe manner for stock, dogs & handlers

Herding 103—Sheep Psychology

Students will be learning about how to read sheep behavior, flock mentality and how to anticipate reactions.

Production 101 - Stock Primer
Tuesday - 2:30 - 3:30 PM
“So you want your own stock” —What breeds work best for herding, how much space and what kind of fencing/housing do you need?

Production 104 - How to build
Stock Fence/Pens
M/T/TH/F 7 am - 11 am
A hands-on practicum on how to construct and maintain fencing appropriate for a variety of stock. Instruction will include what tools to use, what types are fencing are appropriate for what uses. Electric & Post/wire will be covered.

Now you have stock - recommended health & nutrition program for small flocks

Production 203—Hands On Basic Sheep Handling
Thurs 12 noon to 2:15PM
Basics of sheep handling—how to hold, trim feet, administer worm medication, vaccinations etc.

Herding 201 - Fundamentals

Herding Fundamentals—Building a strong foundation of skills including flanks, outruns, fetching & driving. Prerequisite: Herding 101 or equivalent skills)

Tending 201/ Working The Graze

Dogs and handlers will be working their dogs on honoring the border and working the graze. (pre-requisite: Intro to borders)

Herding 202—Whistle While You Work
2:30 PM to 4:30 PM

Basic instruction on how to use a sheepherders whistle and commonly used commands. Whistles provided.

Herding 204 - Ducks
Tues/Thurs 5 PM—dark

“Herding Most Fowl” How to work ducks successfully. This course is designed to introduce dogs & handlers to the joys and pitfalls of managing and herding ducks.

Herding 303 - Stock Handling/The Art of the Perfect Set-out

Tues/Thurs 5PM - dark

One of the most important components of a trial run is the initial set out of the stock. This class will deal with how to get the stock from the pen to the set out point in a calm, quiet manner and the role of the stock handler plays to insure a safe run for the stock, dog and handler

Fiber Art - Spin One, Purl Two

Session 1 - Introduction to spinning Learn how to spin on a drop spindle and if you are brave, on a spinning wheel. We will also do some carding on a drum carder to make roving (the step before spinning).

Session 2 - Introduction to knitting Learn how to cast on, knit and purl and what ever else we have time for.

Stock Dog Obedience

Obedience class to help your stock dog be more in tune with you while in the arena. Exercises to improve your dogs attention to you when working stock.

The Great Cattle, Sheep & Duck Drive - Regional Field Trip
On Wednesday, symposium students will be invited to participate in an all-day educational excursion visiting stock operations within a 50-mile radius of Rancho Terra Norte'. Field Trip attendees will be invited to participate in a variety of stock related activities at each stop.
